Step-Ups with Pack
Why Do It?
The weighted step-up is the single most specific gym movement for mountain hunting. It mimics the mechanics of climbing steep terrain while under load, building unilateral leg strength and stability.
Execution
- Stand facing a box or bench (16-20 inches high).
- Wear your hunting pack loaded with 20-40lbs.
- Place one foot entirely on the box. Drive through the heel to stand up fully, extending the hip.
- Control the descent back to the starting position.
- Complete all reps on one leg before switching, or alternate legs.
Common Mistakes
- Pushing off with the bottom leg (bouncing).
- Letting the knee cave inward (valgus collapse).
- Not standing up all the way at the top.
