Why Do It?
Lifting a heavy object over your head is the ultimate test of upper body and core rigidity. In the field, you need this strength to effortlessly hoist a 50lb pack onto your back or hang meat high in a tree.
Execution
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, barbell resting on your front delts.
- Squeeze your glutes and quads to create a rigid base.
- Press the bar vertically in a straight line, moving your head back slightly to clear the path.
- Once the bar clears your head, push your head "through the window."
- Lock out elbows at the top with the bar directly over your spine.
Common Mistakes
- Arching the lower back excessively.
- Using leg drive (turning it into a push press).
- Pressing the bar forward instead of straight up.
