Why Do It?
The deadlift is the king of posterior chain exercises. It strengthens the hamstrings, glutes, and lower back—the exact engine you need to haul heavy meat out of a canyon. It teaches you to pick up heavy objects safely.
Execution
- Stand with feet hip-width apart, barbell over mid-foot.
- Hinge at the hips to grip the bar just outside your legs.
- Bring your shins to the bar. Chest up, back flat.
- Take a deep breath and brace your core.
- Drive your feet into the floor to lift. Lock out hips at the top.
Common Mistakes
- Rounding the lower back (cat-back).
- Jerking the bar off the floor.
- Over-extending (leaning back) at the top.
