Box Jumps

Why Do It?

Steep mountain ascents require explosive power, not just slow grinding strength. The box jump trains your nervous system to fire rapidly (triple extension), mimicking the action of powering up a large rock step or fallen log.

Execution

  1. Stand facing a box of appropriate height (20-24").
  2. Hinge hips back and swing arms to load.
  3. Explosively extend hips, knees, and ankles to propel yourself up.
  4. Land SOFTLY on top of the box. Knees bent, feet flat. Think "ninja landing."
  5. Stand up fully to complete the rep.
  6. Step down (do not jump down to save your achilles).

Common Mistakes

  • Landing hard (loud thud). This pounds your joints.
  • Choosing a box that is too high, forcing you to tuck your knees to your chest instead of actually jumping higher.
  • Jumping down backward (high risk of injury).

Recommended Reps

Power: 3-5 sets of 3-5 reps

*Keep volume low. This is a power exercise, not conditioning. If you get tired, form breaks down and shins get scraped.
