Tapering: Timing Your Peak

The most common mistake amateur hunters make is training hard until the day they leave. This leaves you starting your hunt with a "debt" of fatigue. A proper taper clears fatigue while maintaining fitness, allowing you to express your true potential.

The Physiology of Supercompensation

Training breaks you down. Recovery builds you back up. When you train hard for months, you accumulate "residual fatigue." By reducing the training volume (but not intensity) 10-14 days before the hunt, you allow your body to clear this fatigue. The result is a "supercompensation" effect where performance spikes.

The 2-Week Taper Protocol

14 Days Out

Reduce volume by 30%. If you usually ruck 5 miles, ruck 3.5. Keep the weight heavy. We want to tell the body "we still need strength," but we stop digging the hole deeper.

7 Days Out

Reduce volume by 50%. Short, sharp sessions. 20-minute heavy carries or sprints. Focus on mobility and sleep.

3 Days Out

Active recovery only. Walking, stretching, equipment checks.

Psychological Warning

You will feel "stale" or lazy during the taper. Your brain is used to endorphins. Ignore this. Trust the process. You are simply charging the battery to 100%.
