Sleep Systems & Recovery in the Field

You can train for a year, but if you sleep poor for 3 straight nights on a mountain, you will perform like an untrained novice. Sleep is the number one performance enhancer. Protect it.

The Sleep System Equation

Your sleep system is not just a bag; it is your life support.
The Pad: The ground sucks heat from you 50x faster than the air. A high R-value pad is non-negotiable.
The Bag: Ratings are for "survival," not comfort. If it's going to be 20°F, bring a 0°F bag or accept a shivering night.

Field Recovery Tactics

1. Elevate the Legs

Gravity is the enemy. Fluid pools in your legs after a day of hiking. Spend 10 minutes with your feet up on your pack before sleeping to drain the edema.

2. Rolling Out

Your Nalgene bottle is a foam roller. Use it on your quads, IT bands, and calves to mash out trigger points before they become injuries.

3. Strategic Caffeine

Stop caffeine intake by 2 PM. Altitude already disrupts sleep cycles; do not add a stimulant to the mix.

Conclusion

Prioritize your sleep system as if your hunt depends on it—because it does.
